Cimarrón Spirit
In the Dominican Republic, as early as 1512, African slaves escaped from Spanish plantations and lived with the island’s Taíno Indians or on their own in mountainous jungles in the remote frontier land of Hispaniola. These people who were known as “cimarrones,” meaning “maroons,” created their own independent communities that have survived for centuries and until recently remained isolated from mainstream Dominican society. These resilient and resourceful “outlaws” have long developed their own celebrations, many of which mock a society that enslaved and branded them.

Mystic Revealers: 8 Miles From Kingston
8 Miles from Kingston, a 20 to 30 minute drive from the city gets you in Bull Bay at the place called Jamnesia, a hub for live reggae music and a hot spot for surfers. The place was established by Anthony Wilmot aka Billy Mystic, lead singer of Mystic Revealers, and his family, being now renowned as the incubator of the reggae revival movement. Mystic Revealers took form in late ’70s; a band who stood firm on the scene in times when dancehall became the trend on the streets of Jamaica. Now, after more than a decade of hiatus, Mystic Revealers are ready to hit the road again. Learn about their story in this 20-minute documentary created by Kush Asher and Imani Wilmot and put Jamnesia on your ‘to-do list’ while on the island.
